Listed above I have the 10 known children of Louis and Rose Padgug. The first 7 are shown on the left in chronological order. The last 3 on the right are out of order since I have no birth dates at this time. I have a birth date for Ben Padgug from his Social Security records but, since he was born in Russia, I have no Birth Certificate. I have a birth date for Michael from the SSDI. A search in New York City for 1889 found no birth record so again I have no further information. Then I have 5 children for whom I was able to identify a birth date and get a Birth Certificate. I have no info for the last 3 since there I have no birth dates.
The information for the 5 Birth Certificates is both useful and confusing. The children were born at home in Manhattan. Willett St, Stanton St. and East 8th St are all located in a small section of the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The births were reported in each case by another individual who also lived in the same area. Note that Rivington St. is also in the Lower East Side). I am not sure of the first name of "Milansky" who reported two births. It is possible that these women are midwifes who also performed an additional function of reporting the birth. They filled out the form after the delivery then registered the birth with the Department of Health. Possibly Michael, who was born very soon after their arrival, was delivered without assistance, hence no certificate.
Also Dinah Milansky's handwriting changes between the two births she reported. Somebody else probably signed one of the forms for her.
The reported surname changes as the "reporter" changes. I would have to guess that Louis and Rose were not literate in English. They could not write the name so the "midwife" would write the information as she heard it and then report it for the certificate. First names are more of a problem especially for Rose. Note how her first name changes from child to child. Rose's maiden name is consistent with slight variation in spelling.
Ages are interesting too. The ages given for Louis would place his birth in 1861 or so. His gravestone and Death Certificate place his birth in 1857. Rose seems to run about 4 years younger but there is no absolute consistency. "Number of Previous Children" and "Number Living" is very interesting. Anne and Sam, number 3 and 4 are shown with 8 and 9 previous births. Rose may have lost 5 children prior to 1893. These could have been in Russia or in the US. By the time Joseph was born they had switched to a different "midwife" and didn't pass on that information. It is not until Gussie that there is any additional indication of non surviving children.
Obviously for the 3 children with unknown birth dates, one falls between 10/9/1894 and 2/21/1899 or with a little logic between 10/1895 and 2/1888. Then the 2 others must be born between 2/1900 and 6/1903. I can request birth certificates but I don't know which surname to use. I will include a letter with the application.
Note that Louis starts as a tailor, then changes to a grocer. They must have saved some money until they opened a store.
There is a shot at naturalization papers with this list of addresses. They lived within a very confined area from 1893 until 1905. Louis died in 1916 and must have been chronically ill later in life. If he became a citizen then it is likely it was while living in that area. The local court house would be a logical starting point.
